Farmhouse Holiday Blanket – Introduction

I have been wanting to make a Christmas/Holiday blanket for years. Something beautiful and cozy that gets pulled out each year as the air grows cooler and then gets tucked away again after the holidays. I always want to do this right at Christmas time, leaving me with no time to complete one, let alone come up with an idea I love first. I’m happy to announce that didn’t happen this year!

This blanket is beautiful. It has a rustic farmhouse charm (a style I love) and the colors are neutral with a great pop of red. It is seriously so soft and cozy thanks to the Mighty Stitch yarn. If you haven’t tried this yarn, it’s a must – not only is it soft and squishy, it has a very pretty sheen, great stitch definition and there are so many gorgeous and rich colors to choose from. This blanket would also be stunning with shades of red or green for the tree or warm neutrals and browns.

One of my favorite things about this blanket is the granny squares because they remind me of tiny snowflakes. And did I mention, they work up quickly? A must with a project like this. The border has the look and feel of a cozy sweater which is perfect for a cozy holiday blanket. The squares are joined using one of my absolute favorite methods, creating a subtle frame around each block while also maintaining a flat and sleek look overall. I hope you guys love this blanket as much as I do.

Farmhouse Holiday Blanket

Supplies:

• Worsted weight yarn – I used Mighty Stitch (worsted weight 208 yards/100 grams) in:
  • Oyster (main color) x 7 skeins
  • Black x 1 skein **
  • White x 1 skein
  • Ash x 3 skeins
  • Love Letter (border color) x 3 skeins
• 5.5 mm crochet hook
• Scissors
• Darning/Yarn needle

** Note: if you crochet loosely, you may consider getting a second skein of black (and possibly white). I had very little black left. **

Gauge: 

Each granny square measures approximately 3.75 inches.

Finished Dimensions: 

The overall finished blanket measures approximately 55 by 47 inches.

Note: You may adjust the finished size of your blanket a few different ways. You could choose to repeat the final row of each square 1 or even 2 more times to get every square a little bigger. You could also choose to add an extra round (or 2) of granny squares along all sides of the blanket.

I really like the cozy, ribbed border and the pop of color, but this blanket also looks beautiful without it, so that’s something else for you to consider before getting started!
